An aged and battered Patti calls out from the depths of the well, but Kevin drowns her. He is, basically, a criminal acting out just as many others have post-October 14. He witnesses a man, Dean, shooting a dog. As I mentioned in my review of The Strain this week another show based on a novel , The Leftovers is a show that takes a drawn-out and novelistic approach, teasing that something in the future will bring these stories together. Laurie is revealed to be a psychiatrist and Patti, her patient, senses an upcoming apocalyptic event. Returning to Miracle, they come upon a man and his young son with car trouble.
Through illegal methods, he finds him and explains his storied and sordid past. While there she bumps into Evie. The woman reveals herself to be Grace, who has lost all of her family; and has just killed a police officer, based on Kevin's sudden appearance and the note he was found with from Matt's book. Before they carry their task, the Kevins realize their regret in their handling of Nora and decide never to return to the undead world again. Upon arrival, Nora undergoes a physical examination before being asked a question: would she allow the murder of a baby if it meant that the child's twin would grow up to cure cancer. Patti and President Kevin watch the nuclear apocalypse as Kevin returns to the world of the living, where the rain has stopped.
She claims that anyone who really lost their entire family would know that moving on is impossible. He awakens to find people outside the house building a boat for a flood. After a lengthy journey back to Mapleton, she learned that her husband had remarried and her children were happy in their lives. That night, he awakens at the bottom of a drained lake with a cinder block tied to his ankle; just a few feet away from where the three girls' car has been abandoned. Kevin encounters Dean again and the pair witness a pack of dogs murdering a deer, leading the pair to shoot the pack together. He subsequently alternates consciousnesses between the two.
When she returns home to Mapleton, Kevin arrives and asks her out, to which she happily agrees. She discovers that her departed husband was having an affair and decides to file for divorce. Meanwhile, Nora almost misses her bus after a strange woman begs her to watch over her baby. Kevin receives a visit from Dean, a familiar face from Mapleton. He robbed a dry cleaner. Matt wins the game and earns enough money to buy back his church. Hate crimes are not the answer.
After learning that he has escaped the mental institute, Kevin tracks down his father, who has been hearing voices since the Departure. After reassuring Kevin that she would believe him if he said that Patti was no longer haunting him, Kevin storms off leaving a flustered Jill and Laurie behind. Burton attempts escape, but is mauled by one of Frasier's descendants. After a quarrel with Jill, Kevin goes to the motel where Laurie is staying and divulges his plight. En route to Mapleton, Matt and Kevin have lunch in a diner and Kevin tearfully admits that he wants his family to reunite. Patti in particular proved her evil cunning this week, carefully manipulating everyone around her to do exactly what she wanted. After a brief visit with Virgil, Kevin is summoned to the city gates by troopers who tell him his wife, Laurie, is there.
